The piece is a snapshot of how negatively Steely Dan were viewed at the turn of this century, particularly by people whose tastes and values were shaped by late-’80s/early-’90s indie rock. In the 22 years between its inception in 1996 and the day the first of these reviews went live, Pitchfork had published exactly one other piece of critical writing about Steely Dan: writer Brent DiCrescenzo’s vitriolic review of Steely Dan’s 2000 reunion album “Two Against Nature” (1.6). In 2019, two years after Becker died, the online music magazine Pitchfork ran a week of newly commissioned retrospective reviews of classic Steely Dan albums like “Katy Lied” (rated 9.1 out of 10), “Gaucho” (9.4) and “Aja ” (a perfect 10). ![]() On the day Becker died, Donald Fagen - the other half of Steely Dan’s creative core - issued a statement recalling his longtime writing partner as “cynical about human nature, including his own, and hysterically funny.” Becker’s passing was marked on social media by his generational and actuarial peers - Kiss’ Paul Stanley, the Heartbreakers’ Benmont Tench, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and P-Funk’s Bootsy Collins - but also by Roots bandleader Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, who called Walter an “artist’s artist,” and producer Mark Ronson, who called Becker “one-half of the team I aspire to every time I sit down at a piano.” Opening for U2 in Detroit that weekend, Beck paid tribute to “a rock ‘n’ roll hero” by slipping a few bars of “Josie” into “Where It’s At.” Fans both likely and unlikely came out of the woodwork: Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino and Bryan Adams, Mac DeMarco and Slash, Julian Lennon and Thundercat, John Mulaney and Just Blaze, not to mention countless regular people testifying that they too had been shaped - or warped - by Becker and Fagen’s work. There is no way for a third-party app to add files and have them remain on a device after syncing. This doesn’t mean he wasn’t publicly mourned. This is no fault of Waltr it’s simply the way iTunes and iOS interact. And the next time you sync the device, iTunes will delete any content you’ve added with Waltr, because it’s not in your iTunes library. Your iOS device needs to be connected to the computer-you can’t do this with Wi-Fi syncing. You can also copy items to your iOS device using Waltr on a different Mac from the one you use to sync the device, so if you sync your iPhone with iTunes at home, and you want to add an album from your Mac at work, you can. I’ve often found that when I want to add an album to my iPhone before I go out for a walk, iTunes hiccups and takes 15 minutes to sync. Not only can you add non-iOS compatible files to an iOS device, but it’s a great way to quickly copy an album or a video to your device without doing a full sync. There are many advantages to using Waltr. The developers told me that they’re updating the app to work with older AVI files, which use certain codecs that currently don’t work with the app. ![]() While Waltr claims it can convert any video file in compatible formats, it does have issues with some AVI files. If you want to put an MKV file on your iPad, Waltr converts it to an MV4 file, which, in most cases, is essentially the same as the MKV file, just with a different wrapper. ![]() …and then drop files onto Waltr’s window to convert them and add them to your iOS device, where you can play them in the native Music and Videos apps. It can even copy high-resolution audio files, but the iOS device is still limited to the bit depth and sample rate that it can play. ![]() For example, if you want to copy a FLAC file, drag it onto Waltr’s window, and the app creates an ALAC copy-since conversion to Apple Lossless retains the original quality-and copies it.
